While opinions vary, and we’ll probably regret writing this article, certain groups consistently rise to the top of all fan discussions.
Comic book fans have long debated the greatest superhero teams in the history of the medium. While opinions vary, and we’ll probably regret writing this article, certain groups consistently rise to the top of all fan discussions.
The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have been a cornerstone of Marvel Comics since 1963. Jarvis and Tigra are reason enough to put the Avengers on this list.
The Justice League: Since their debut in 1960, the Justice League has defended Earth from countless threats. As far as we’re concerned, every iteration of the JLA is worth reading. Ok, maybe not Justice League Europe...
The X-Men: Marvel’s team of mutant heroes has been at the forefront of social commentary in comics since 1963. With a vast and diverse cast of characters, the X-Men have become one of the most popular superhero teams ever, and have probably had the most amount of titles and spin-offs over the years.
The Fantastic Four: Often called “Marvel’s First Family,” the Fantastic Four kicked off Marvel’s Silver Age in 1961. Their blend of family dynamics and cosmic adventures has made them a fan favorite for decades.
The Teen Titans: DC’s team of young heroes has gone through many iterations since their 1964 debut. The 1980s “New Teen Titans” run by Marv Wolfman and George Perez is particularly beloved by fans.
The Justice Society of America: The first superhero team in comics, debuting in 1940, the JSA laid the groundwork for all superhero teams to follow.
The Defenders: This “non-team” of Marvel misfits, including Doctor Strange, Hulk, and Namor, has attracted a cult following since their 1971 debut. We still love the Erik Larson relaunch in the 2000s. A forgotten gem.
The Legion of Super-Heroes: DC’s futuristic team of teenage heroes from across the galaxy has been captivating readers since 1958 with its unique sci-fi take on superheroics.
The Doom Patrol: Often called “the World’s Strangest Heroes,” DC’s team of outcasts has been pushing the boundaries of superhero storytelling since 1963.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Ok, they might not technically be superheroes, but by golly, the interplay between the characters is fantastic.
